I lost one. We had a hawk come through the netting on the top of their pen. We were working in the house/yard in and out, and I went to the store leaving my sister in charge. Most of the top is hardware cloth or 1' chicken wire, but the very middle I just had garden netting since they are not staying out nights. All my sister saw was something move very fast (dropping) and just like that little Varly chick was gone. My sister saved the rest and managed to get the very angry hawk out. There is now not a crack that a critter can get through. I feel so bad, I let my girls down, I thought with us in and out and all around, radio playing, we were going to finish the top later that day.
So I have mourned, still am for that matter, but I don't think three is a good number. They are about 7 weeks, I don't really want wee babies, the farm supply store has Barred Rocks hatched March 30th. Are they all a good age to add without too much fuss? I was figuring on putting the newbies in a smaller container inside the big pen for a few days. I tried a search but probably used the wrong terms.

I'm so sorry. I too have lost a chicken to a hawk, she had been laying less than a month when it killed her. It couldn't carry her away, as she was too big.

As for adding a new chick, they are really easy to integrate when they are young. When they get older, it gets a lot more tricky. Do you have a heat lamp in the coop for the new one? If not, then purchase 2 chicks and brood them together and when they are fully feathered, add them with the other chicks.
