HEY! Whats a boy doing in our flock? Now what?

He has 2 girls his age brooded together. The 3 moved in with 2 3yr old hens. One cant hold her own well against him...... i have a pen within their coop.....has everything....temped to keep him in there away from the girls until free range. can this work?

So you have 2 hens, 2 pullets and a cockerel. Sounds like a perfect ratio to me. If you aren't prohibited from keeping a rooster then keep him as part of your flock. Separating him gains nothing except a very unhappy lonely cockerel. His little group is his family and unless something happens to indicate otherwise I don't see a problem. The older hens will teach him how to behave.

Yes, I had four roosters and each had their own pen for awhile. They weren’t thrilled but, oh well!

i have no experience with roosters so his behavior now, is a freshie. I dont know if it will continue? I moved him and 2 brood mates into a coop with 2 hens that are 3years. One is a bit disabled and I fear will be unable to ward him off. The other 3 yr old is the sweetest Sussex ever. He dragged his little flock mate, by the neck twice, and I witnessed him jump on the older girl and try mating her, and they fought yesterday. He has had 2 fights with my my other flock as well. They are strong and he avoids them. They have their own coop. Heres a pic of where I can possibly keep him seperated. His little flock mates seem to love/hate him. I'm so confused! Heres a pic of the coop that had 2 girls. The second and third pics are an extra pen thin if necessary. Thank you

I'd either put him in with these hens

so they can teach him manners, or by himself in the little coop you have there until he learns to behave himself.

Your coop is a lovely blue, by the way .

Thank you for all your help everyone. I want him to thrive. Im on my way outside to let him go roost with his flock. I pen him during the second half of evening free range because thats a time i notice he becomes a little unbearable. I'll go let him up the ramp now that the girls are roosted. Does this seem ok? Thank you

Chickens tend to sort themselves out and I wouldn't get too het up about a bit of argy bargy, so long as nobody is actually being injured. The odd fisticuffs to establish flock position is normal, and this young whippersnapper will test boundaries and bit a bit of a teenage A-hole for a period of time. It's normal cockerel development. Older hens are usually good at teaching manners.

I'd leave them be to sort it themselves but keep an eye on them.

My current rooster is the best boy I've had and he had a few months of hormonal mania before he settled down. I'm glad I stuck with him. It was worth the wait.

I would leave him in with the hens. This is new to them all, they are working on establishing a new pecking order while teaching the young Roo. My experience is the younger the Roo is integrated the better harmony they develop and the nicer they are to the ladies. I have 5 Roos with ABOUT 30 hens presently. I try not to count. Probably closer to 40. All have been in with the hens since they were about 3-4 weeks old, never segregated. Mine free range during the day and split into groups, Roos are a great warning system to protect their ladies.
