md, how about Javas? Mainly black Javas. I'd consider those myself. Beautiful black with green sheen, brown eggs, on the Endangered List. My second choice might be Barred Hollands, however, those lay white eggs. Yep, Javas would look spectacular next to the Buckeyes. They were imported to America in the 1800's so are not original to this country, but far enough back, I'd think.

hey how about some andalusians . dont think they are american but they are critical. i have one hen looking for a roo. she lays a tinted egg.and this hen is coming around and getting better at the hand feeding.they are beutiful blue laced with a darker color. jmo johnny good luck with ur pick .

Mottled Java? I think there was an article in Backyard Poultry magazine about this breed. I like the idea of raising an American breed that is critical or declining.
