Adding to my flock... the dilemma

not to hijack the thread, but i love chicken math

i like the way we always round up in favor of one more chicken

lets see, i can have 5.5 standards, so that means 6 right? and 6 standards equals 12 bantams, i just need to add a little

That's funny. Actually, I wasn't rounding up though. 1.5 heavy breeds = 6 feet, and that's 2 regular breed at 3 sq feet each. But I've kind rounded up. Might add an extra for good measure. You know one did die and it's good to be prepared in case another one does.

Totally sold out of eggs today. I'm going to need these girls to grow up fast

I already can't meet the demand.

Yeah, I'm very excited. I'll have barred rocks in this hatch too, but I want to keep the ones from yours if I get a pullet even if it puts me 4 weeks behind on laying. I just wish I could get them to grow up faster.

Do rocks mature fast or slow?

They are relatively fast maturing birds. My first one ever began laying at 21 or 22 weeks, I think. I've never had one wait past 24 weeks to lay the first egg, at least not so far. My pullet who is half Barred Rock, half Cochin/Silkie laid her first egg at 18 weeks.
