This is where either having a dad who did this type of work and taught me or having a handy husband would really come in handy.

That's just about 2/3 of a square foot -- big enough to make a difference and mounted in the most useful place.

They also sell damper kits that are automatic open when it's hot and close when it's cold.

IMO, that would be a completely waste of money. Overhead ventilation would never need to be closed. Chickens need an abundance of fresh air in all climates and seasons.

Their built-in down parkas keep them warm if we do our part by keeping them dry.

It's not a complete waste of money if the winters are very cold and the summers are hot. It's up to them at the end of the day.

How does that not allow water into the coop? I see that you seal the holes, but wouldn't rain come in through the whirly thing?
