ADDITIONAL INFO: Ugh. My Margo. Again.

Viron...this kills a lot of yucky stuff.

Thanks. If Margo for sure had it, sounds like she had the virus, but not the tumors, so maybe the vaccine worked? I’m not totally clear yet on what the “evidence” of Mareks was, except the nerve caps. I am hoping they spell it out for me in the final report.

The Virkon information is helpful... except Mareks has been shed all over two acres for three years. I don’t think I can eradicate that. This will probably be my last flock, at least in this location.

As for Happy Cheeks (chick) I did not know there was Mareks in my flock and they were exposed the night they arrived home, since I really got them for Cashew (broody). (Point being... before vaccine could take effect.)

I plan to enjoy, love and care for these lovelies as long as possible. I’m not sure what I will do after that.

Hearing you speak of not having chickens anymore after this flock resonates with me...*sadness* I get it.:( Wish I didn't. Personally, not sure how to not have them in my life, but the sadness of losing them can be so traumatic. They are such wonderful creatures and bring us such joy:jumpy, yet this kind of horror, despite doing all you can to do right and good by your critters, still happens. #Merekssucks@ss :barnie

Feels like we have to be "dual purpose" chicken parents: rawhide and nails AND still have soft open hearts to care for our birds...that is if they are more like pets to you (as they are for me).

My heart aches for you. So many of us, new to chickens or old salties, loving our chickens as pets or as food, are learning from this information and sweet Margo's passing. We are getting better at this because of you. IMO, you are brave. You have a gentle warrior's spirit. Your chickens are super lucky to have you as their mama.:hugs

Thank you so much for these kind words. Yes, mine are very much beloved pets. I had no idea I could love them so much. I just don’t feel I can responsibly add any more to this flock if there really is Mareks. I am heart broken, but I’m enjoying the eleven girls I still have! I posted this elsewhere on the forums, but here is a dorky video of me this morning letting them out of the run for the day. Margo would have been leading the stampede.:)
