ADDITIONAL INFO: Ugh. My Margo. Again.

If chicks are vaccinated for Marek's they have to be kept away from Marek's for a few weeks for the vaccine to have time to kick in...I believe.
But the vaccine doesn't prevent them from getting the disease.

I am VERY humbled by the news about the fat. I feel terrible... I thought I gave minimal treats. Enough on that. Treats are OVER.

I am shocked to read of the ongoing egg yolk peritonitis, because Margo was a very strong layer up until the very end.

As far as the Mareks, yep. Devastated. I should not have gotten chicks this year. I am thinking this might be what killed Happy Cheeks, as she was doing a weird stiff leg thing. I just didn’t think they could succumb so young. Thought there was an incubation period.

But the vet said the fat didn’t contribute to her death, so I think you might be okay with the level of treats you were feeding. Some fat is necessary and healthy IMO.

And I’m very sorry about the infection and her death. You really cared for her and it’s a great kindness to share the necropsy results here so we can learn also. :hugs

I read that book! I think it was by Ray Bradbury and was called something like “All Summer in a Day.” Such a powerful story.

That’s so sad about your bro. Glad he survived it!
I'll look it up. I've been curious about what book it was, but it's been so long I couldn't come close to remembering the title. Thanks!

Yeah, he survived, and I don't think he's any worse for wear. Only lasting reminder is that he has a "second belly button" from where the feeding tube went through to his stomach. (And my mom constantly worries about him getting brain cancer, but that's a long story)

But can they get symptoms at two weeks? It doesn’t really change anything, since they were exposed right away and I did not have them vaccinated. My feed store buys from Privette. I assume chicks are not vaccinated unless owner has it done by a vet?

Hatcheries can and will vaccinate but the buyer has to request it.
I highly doubt local feed store request it.

I agree. It wasn't like they said she was morbidly obese or in poor body condition (poor can go either way, too fat or too skinny), but they said she was good. I wouldn't feel horrible about it. She had no ill effects from it. It was her darn reproductive system. Poor girl. You didn't do anything to make her sick. You took great care of her and loved her!

Fat chickens get reproductive disorders.
A lot of fat is not healthy on a chicken.

Right, but I have other much heavier breeds who might be suffering ill effects. And fatty stores can contribute to rreproductive problems. Regardless, it sounds like she was immunosuppressed by the Mareks, and she succumbed to the acute, unidentified infection. We still have a final report to come yet.

So now I’m realizing Millie’s limp has probably been Mareks all along. @rebrascora, do you know if a chick can die from Mareks at two weeks?
