Its a bummer that you hit the dog. But if it is known to wander alot. Then you know for sure that its not your fault.. I sure hope you heal ok.. My dog once got hit. My dog was not a wandering dog. But she saw her cat accross the street and decided she wanted to go get her and round her up and make the cat come home.. Right when my dog got to the other side of the street. I immediatly told her to stop.. Then to come.. She stopped and listened. And right as she was comming accross the road. A car came down the road and got her. It was a total accident. Just at the wrong place at wrong time. The lady that was driving tried to pay for her medical care. But I told her it was not her fault. I paid for her vet visit.. The lady came back and checked up on my dog a few days later to make sure she was ok.. She worked at the school down the road.. She knew my dog and how well behaved she was.. Accidents happen.. Now I feel bad about my dog getting hit. If I didnt order her to come.. Then she would have stayed on the other side.

No need to be angry with the dog owner even though it is their fault. Now if you have damage to your vehicle and there is a leash law in your area, they may even be responsible for the damage.

If your insurance were to increase with a claim and there is a known leash law you either seek monies from the dog owner or take care of it yourself.

Either way its an aweful position to be in.

If it were me I would be so upset that my dog was injured but I could not possibly be angry with someone for hitting him if they were doing the speed limit. After all they were in the right like you are.

You were really nice to stop and try to help the dog. You are at no fault whatsoever, unless you were speeding which you shouldn't have been doing, but the simple matter of the fact is that the dog should not have been in your right of path.

Are you gonna have to pay for your medical bill? I hope you have insurance!

Dogs should be kept on leash, and if they are not, the owners take responsibility that anything could happen to the dog. Completely not your fault. I would be sooo upset to hit a dog, I would really be angry at the owners. Not fair at all.

Yeah, we weren't speeding, we weren't very far from our driveway so we were only going Maybe 20mph & slowing, even more when we saw her bolt out. I think if we hit her at a faster speed it really could have caused some damage & blood. At least she wasn't bleeding, externally anyway.

ETA: I do have insurance so im not worried about the bill.

One reason may be to make sure it had all the proper shots. Do you know if they gave their dog a shot to prevent rabies? I am not sure I would just trust their word. I would want to talk to their vet.

Hope you get better soon. That has got to hurt.

In ALL dog bite cases, it must be reported. Unless the dog is dead, the dog is labelled a "biter". It is a "mark" and judges are not so leninent on repeated biters.

We had a collie dog that was a fear biter (of motorcycles) or sudden enterance into the house (she reacted to my sister's squealing of playing with her friend, running down the stairs and entered into the room that the dog was in. She knew of the dog being in the room but forgot about it.) Anyway, twice she bit, the judge told my parents next time, the dog has to be put down, the three strikes you are out, regardless of the situation. From then on, we have not had any problems with her because we knew what she was afraid of and confine her into her room or crate when rowdy kids come over to play or motorcyclists playing in our pastures.

Anyway, we do not allow our dogs run loose if we are supervising them. If they get hit, it is NOT the driver's fault.

Bleenie, I hope the owners do not sue you for the dog. However it is OK to send them a sympathy card but nothing more.

we were also going to ask them for the dogs paperwork to make sure it's vaccinated & UTD. She had all her tags on too but they could also be old tags i guess.

Thats so sad about the poor dog..AND you getting bit! Yikes! Was the dog up on its rabies??
And..it wasnt your fault.. I would never blame someone for hitting my dog if it was loose. Its my fault because the dog is supposed to be IN my yard..not running in the road...
Although..i have been known to stop traffic on a busy road and not let any cars pass when my dog was loose... hee hee, that ticked some drivers off... But i didnt want anyone to hit her... so..

I have two weiner dogs and I'm here to tell you that they are obnoxious little buggers! Mine have been trained and are inside dogs, however if someone comes up or is going down my verrrry long driveway, they have and will chase the car. One of them will come back when called, but the most obnoxious one will not until she's sure that she's chased away the big bad metal monster. I keep them in when I know someone is coming or we have company leaving, but there have been times when we've been outside and they've both chased a car (at the instigation of the obnoxious one). If someone were to run over one or the other, I would cry, but I would never blame, accuse or hold them accountable. Mine are very good dogs, but as most weiner dogs are, they tend to be quirky. I will NOT own another one after these girls go to dog heaven. If I own another dog, it will be one that I CAN control in situations such as these.

Three years ago my neighbor hit our dog. It was my fault. She bolted out the door when the boys came home from a sports event. And, she ran up the drive and right into the path of their car. He did not pick her up - she ran back home. She is a Standard Poodle. He did drive down my driveway and tell me. He can be a very difficult man but, in this case it was nice of him to tell me. Long story short, I did not expect him to pay for anything. I was happy she didn't cause damage to his car. It cost me close to $3,000 to fix her damaged hip.

This is not Bleenies fault. The owner should have been mad - at himself.

Bleenie, I hope your finger heals quickly and that your nail grows out without any trouble.

ETA - spelling check...
