Adopted Shepherd --UPDATE New Pix on first page

He doesn't like to be anywhere by himself and he's really plastered to me out in the yard so I can't sneak back in the house and leave him out there in the wide, wide world ALONE!

That is a good thing! I can't stand a dog that likes to run off. He is a cutie!

The black muzzle and the black tips all over his back (as opposed to just a large patch as in the GSD) and then the black tail remind me of our Belgian Malinois that we had. He's absolutely adorable!

I googled Belgian Malinois and there was a picture of a puppy that looked EXACTLY like Bobby, even down to the little white toes. Since that breed is rather rare in this country, I don't see how a litter of them could have ended up at a shelter, but......if that's what he turns out to be, I'll be happy. They are great dogs.

They are not that rare. I know of several. Also if you have a Schutzhund club nearby then they probably have pups nearby.
There is a BYB near me that is always trying to trade his dogs.

So they do get around.

You got your pup from the shelter, right? Was he possibly born there? Siblings? Mal's usually end up at the shelter as they get older, since they tend to be too hot for many a household. Maybe a pregnant b i t c h (good grief! That's a perfectly legal word when talking about dogs. I hate decency filters for that reason) ended up behind bars that way. She wouldn't be the first.

Yes, Saxet, there were three puppies, all looking somewhat alike. Two males and one female. The adoption people said the litter had been dumped by the roadside, estimated age 7 weeks. I selected the male that I thought was the better-looking. I've had only female dogs for years, and when my husky (alpha dog) died in April, the spaniel moved up to alpha. The Jack Russell is a female also, and very submissive. I think she ranks even below the cats, LOL! I thought a male would integrate more easily into the household and I wouldn't have to fear for my cats' lives (at 8 pounds, he was the size of a cat). He has made friends with the two dogs and two or three of the cats. He adores my 93 year old mom whom I care for full time, but I have to watch that he doesn't chew her shoes or grab her pants leg as she tries to walk around. I don't leave them alone together because she really can't (doesn't) manage him. Of course she thinks he's adorable and lets him do whatever he wants. I keep telling her certain things that are cute when a dog weighs 8 pounds are not so amusing when he weighs 80 lbs.

He now weighs 11 pounds and is developing quite a personality. He's going to be a handful--very strong minded and demanding and into everything. But very loving, bright and trainable, so far, except for housebreaking. He pees outside, he pees inside, all the same-o same-o to him. Usually poops outside, but poops in his crate every night. What a mess in the morning! I admit I don't get up and take him out in the middle of the night. Last outing is usually 11 pm. then 6 am. till he gets out again. Last meal at 5 pm. Seems like he could poop before bedtime, but......nooooooo. Might be a good idea to start a 3 am outing. Ugh. Anyway, I just bought one of those steam floor cleaners so I can sterilize my kitchen floor. Bobby hasn't even seen the rest of the house, and he won't till he learns a few things.

Anyway, he is toeing the line. Rules, boundaries, and limitations, as Cesar Milan would say. When he gets too rambunctious, he goes out in the yard for a break or into his crate so I can have a break. So far he is learning the usual puppy stuff--sit, come, stay, fetch. No leash work yet--will start that as soon as he gets his second set of shots this week, then I'll take him for a little jaunt without the other dogs.

Thanks for your input. I'll keep updating with pix and we'll see what he turns out to be.

If he is even part malinois, you will soon see a dog that wants to be with you all the time. Curious, smart en willing to learn. Also willing to be (very) active. Make sure you make the rules, and you will have a super companion.
If you can stand the thought of putting his crate next to your bed for a while, you should hear him whimper or shift at night so you can take him out. Pups go to the bathroom after they eat, after they sleep, after they play. Pretty much all fo the time. :rolleyes:When he does, attach a command to what he is already doing. Like "good boy! Good potty" One week invested in serious housetraining lessons (think about it this way: if he messes up, you missed the signs) will be a lifetime of reward. Make sure his crate is not too big. For his age, no larger than a # 300. A #200 might even be better right now. Anyway. Best of luck with him. You probably have a great dog on your hands and thanks for giving a shelter animal a new lease on life.
