Hello!

We are and adopting chickens and taking the chicken coop/run from friends who are moving. Moving the chicken coop to our house is going to take a couple of days and I am concerned about the transition. While I had chickens when I was a child, it has been a while so I have been doing a lot of reading especially on your web site. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on keeping the four hens comfortable and calm during this move. I have two large dog kennels I thought I would use. Is there anything I should know in this process?

Thanks so much for your help!
Heather

Welcome to BYC!

Depends on how long the birds will be on the road. If this is a very short trip of 30 mins or less, your dog crates will be fine. If this is a longer trip, you might put them in cardboard boxes. Of course cut air holes in the top and sides. Birds are much more calm in darkness. If they can see, it does stress them. You could always cover the dog crates to make it dark within the crate. Make sure to use some sort of bedding so they have firm footing. Chickens usually sit down when you travel with them.

Good luck with the move and congrats on your new flock!

Thank you for your help. The trip itself will be under 30 minutes so that is good, however, it will take a couple of days to dismantle the coop and rebuild it in our yard. What is important to have in a temporary home that will be 2-3 days besides the obvious?

Thanks again!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! How big and what kind are the dog crates? If they are a decent size you could keep them in there for the few days, just provide food and water and perches if wire ones, and a nesting place (cardboard box?) if they are laying.

Thank you so much for your advice. I think the crates will be plenty big for four hens so I feel good about that. Today is the big move and I am very excited. I am blown away with how active this forum is as I scrolled to page two to get to my question yesterday! Great web site!

Good luck with the move! Keep us posted on how they do. In the future, you can just open your Profile, (top right hand corner of this page) and scroll down and you can find your threads and all you have posted in. That way you don't have to go searching thru a forum to find your thread. :-)

And yes, BYC never sleeps! We are over 260,000 strong and there is a LOT going on at all times. :-)
