I have 12 adolescent chickens and am planning to adopt 2 full grown geese along with there companions 2 ducks and 9 chickens. Will they flight with my teen chickens? Or try to fly home? Do you need a certain run for geese? HELP!!

Geese will do better with their own lodging, if they have been housed with the ducks then that would be fine but I know for a fact my geese and chickens would not be haoppy in the same house. you'll need to keep your new members of the flock separate from your dominant flock especially to make sure none are sick and could bring in anything and expose your chickens you have now, ducks and geese are very hardy and don't carry disease like other poultry can. but for at least 3-4 weeks i would let the 2 groups mingle. I'd keep you new group inside fencing till they realize this new place is their home now. Let the 2 groups begin to see each other after they have come out of quarantine side by side for at least a week then begin letting them out together there will be some pecking order that needs to be worked out but hopefully they will all become one big flock soon after. What is your setup like now do your chickens free range or then inside a fence /run/

Hi Boulla, welcome to the threads. As the new geese are already used to ducks and chickens, I doubt they´ll be a problem to yours, except the new chickens and young chickens may not blend too well at first. However, what Miss Lyudia said about quarantining is a good point to think about, especially with chickens. Also, you may want to worm the new birds just incase they go on to infect your young birds once they´re mingling.
What breed are you hoping to get? Geese will be easily kept in spacious runs on grass, 3 -4 ft high. Or free-ranging. Just make sure one wing is clipped and they won´t be able to lift off, then by the time the flights have re-grown, they´ll be settled. Of course, if you have problems from predatory animals, you´ll have to supply more than the basic run. In that case, you´ll need to shut them in at night, but it would probably best to let the geese have their own 'house', as Miss Lydia said, because in tight conditions they can lay into the chickens and ducks a bit.
We´ll be looking forward to pics!

Thanks for the help. Really exited, will be sure to post some pics when they arrive!
