Adopting humane society chickens

Not always, they dont check for CRD or any respiratory diseases until the bird is stressed out from his new home and bingo, it spreads like wildfire or come down with a dead bird in quarantine or they thought it was a "hen" but it crowed LOL!

Our animal shelter recently had a pig. One of the employees took it home for Sunday dinner.

Now that's funny.

I would consider the risks and quarantine needed for a shelter bird to be pretty much the same as one from a sale or swap.

We thought about adopting what was listed as a rooster, although it looked like a cockerel to me, at one point. This was from the big county humane shelter, not a rescue and they wanted to come do a home inspection. This shelter doesn't even require that for dogs. There's nothing on their web site about home inspections and I wonder if it was the idea of the only person there that handles the chickens. She said we had to wait until the next week to be able to see him, because she was the only person at the shelter allowed to show the chickens to you. Then she said we'd need a home inspection, in addition to the application and vet references. By the time she came back to work, I had the flu, so we just passed on it. I was just too sick to want that much of a hassle.

With my being a Vol fan to my very core, it hurts to agree with anyone with the name oldtimegator, but I do completely. If you take the proper precautions, I don't see what not. The world needs more people like you.

You're funny, Lbrad7!! Yeah, I was born and raised here so I'm a die-hard Gator. I try to get sports-team neutral when I come to this board!!

They need to price chickens more like they price the small animals or small birds that are inexpensive to adopt from shelters. They don't have vet care into them and they're cheap to buy, so they make them cheaper to adopt. It's different with dogs that are spayed or neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested and given basic shots.

I think most shelters just aren't used to having chickens and haven't had time to think about what their policies should be.
