ADOR1 Automatic Coop Door?

I picked mine up today from fed ex. I was out of town. Unfortunately I came home to one dead chicken. I feel so bad. I believe it was a snake as there was no sign of a break-in and the run is flying predator proof but not so secure with anything else. I saw a 5 foot rat snake a hundred or so yards away from the coop the day before I left town. I strongly suspect he located them in the five days I was gone. I can't be sure but I am back and will be on the lookout.

I received my ADOR1 today and am thrilled! It took me about 1/2 hour to install, although I hadn't cut the hole out yet, so the majority of the time was spent on that (and I had two dead batteries for my reciprocating saw). The only issue that I had is that the chickens were a little hesitant to go in tonight, they are used to having an open door for them to go into. But finally, the rooster took the plunge and then the rest followed him in. Door closed a little bit after the sun went down, everyone was inside and cozy. I can't imagine how excited they will be tomorrow morning when they don't have to wait patiently (or not) for me to let them out! Thanks Rod, so far it is everything that I thought it would be.

Oh, I am so sorry. I am so afraid of this happening to my chicks too. We live in the high desert and we get lots of snakes around here. When we built the run and set up the coop we tried to keep snakes in the front of our thoughts so we securely covered any small areas with hardware cloth in hopes of keeping them out. I know you can be 100% safe so they could still find a way if if they wanted to.

Did you get a chance to install your ADOR1 yet?

I know my chicks were pretty happy that first morning. I am not a morning person so 8:00 is about normal for me, but the ADOR opens for them at about 5:15 am. I hear them come out of the coop talking up a storm, then they noisily get their drinks and eat before beginning their day of foraging. They have usually been out for a few hours before I get out their with my morning coffee. I totally love my ADOR!

Ok I ordered mine today after talking with Rod and reading this entire forum! Thanks everyone for the advice, photos, and reviews. It makes buying a non-returnable item a lot easier. I will post photos after its installed. This will be an install the likes no one has seen before. It wont be going on the coop itself, rather on the run. Hope it works!!

You will love the ADOR, I know we do! I look forward to seeing pics. So what made you decide to install it on the run rather than the coop itself?

The ADOR1 has a set of features built-in called "Auxilliary Output" which is a solid-state switch. The switch operates to control one or more of three optional (DIY or we provide... just not selling it yet) accessories. Those three accessories are: NiteLite, OvaLight, and External Alarm. You can set or disable any of these operations. "NiteLight" operates the switch when the daylight diminishes but before the door closes and the switch continues to be closed until some period of time (10 minutes? I have to look it up) after the door closes. The idea is that it should attract the chickens to the coop and once they are inside, to give them a little light to find their spot to roost. Then the switch turns off. NiteLight could be the same lamp as you may want to use for OvaLight, and may also be the same lamp to use for External Alarm if you can, like, see light in the coop from your kitchen window, lets say. Because if the External Alarm is tapping out SOS and you have a coop lamp hooked up the the Aux Switch output, then the light in the coop will be flashing like that. The alarm would be to warn you that the battery is low or that the door did not completely open or shut for some reason. One warning I should say right now is that you will need to operate the lamp from a separate power source since it would draw down the internal battery pretty fast.

Rod is the OvaLight available now (or soon)? I am not sure if it is something that we will need here since this will be our first year with chickens in Arizona, so I am not sure how much daylight we might have. But if I do need to extend the hours a bit I definitely would like to get the light from you.

Mine were so happy this morning! I was happy too, I got to sleep in until 9:00! When I went out to make sure that the door had opened and that they had come out they were just talking away as if trying to tell me that they thought the door was the cat's meow!
