ADOR1 Automatic Coop Door?

My ADOR automatic door may have saved my hens life. On Sunday we were evacuated from our home due to the Yarnell Hills Fire here in Peeples Valley, AZ. I was able (with my granddaughters help) to catch 8 of my young chickens to put them in dog crates ready for travel to our temporary location, but my one hen (Big Red) who is fairly new to us and still afraid to let us touch her, was having no part of this. We even tag-teamed her and still could not catch her. Since the fire was quickly approaching and the Sheriff had already stopped at out house to say we had to go NOW, the decision was made to leave her here. I did not want to do that because she could have been killed in the fire or by smoke, and who knows how long we would be evacuated, how could I keep her cool in the heat and make sure she had cool water to drink?

As I was loading the 4 crates into the truck I looked back at the chicken run and saw that Big Red was no longer in the run...she must have gotten so scared she went inside the coop. With only seconds to spare I ran back to the run and pushed the button on the ADOR so it would quickly close before she could run back out into the open run. With that door securely locked I entered the human door, shut it behind myself, and feathers flew, but within just a moment I had Big Red in my arms. She was terribly unhappy, but I was able to get her into the large crate, and safely in the truck too. I am so thankful I had the ADOR so I could quickly keep her inside the coop and capture her. Thank you Rod.

You can read more about how this evacuation effected my Big Red and my other chickens, both negatively and positively, on my blog.

So glad you were able to catch Big Red ! I hope you, your family and property are no longer in danger... stay safe !

I am new to chicken keeping and feel compelled to do a ton of research prior to making a purchase. We got the Ador and it is awesome-- super easy to install and dependable. The only thing that is a little unexpected is that when the door goes down it seems to stutter a little in the middle of its descent. It doesn't stop or slow down, but it looks like the door just falls the tiniest little bit to the next hole. It's not problematic but makes a more noise compared to when the door goes up. Has anyone else experienced this? It appears that the door is square and all the holes on the side look symmetric.

I would contact Rod with this.

All ready to start the installation ... You can see the required beverage for the project - much needed on a hot day like this !

Installed the ADOR1 in a recessed fashion... I think this will protect it from the elements and makes for a cleaner look on the outside of the coop.

Finished product (minus the trim I will install around the door at a later date). The chicks are curious about their new entry/exit. :)

So glad I purchased the ADOR1 and I'm excited to see how it will work come nightfall.

I contacted Rod about the door stuttering on the decent and got a fast response:

I have seen exactly what you mentioned on many units. Some do it and some don't. Since, to my knowledge, it has not caused a functional problem, I've never determined the cause. It seems like I determined it was play in the gearbox of the motor itself. There is a bit of variation from motor to motor right out of the box.

Very happy with your customer service, Rod. Thanks!

It looks great! Be sure to check on your chickens the first night as it is not unusual for a chicken or two to be nervous about using the new door the first night. Once they eagerly exit thru it the first morning they will get over any fears.

Mine stutters a little going down as well. Otherwise it works perfectly. I think it is just gravity, not a malfunction, as it does not do it when lifting the door open.
