Adult duck with perosis (slipped tendon)?

My 6 year old blue swedish duck (Her name's Duck) was chased by a drake and she stepped badly on un even ground. She was limping and could barely walk, I witnessed the accident and immediately got her separated from the flock. It's been a couple weeks of her mostly being away from the others with food and water close to her. Not much change since then. I was hoping it was a sprain but seems more likely to be a slipped tendon.

With hardly any resources on the web, I don't know how to handle this situation.

Some questions I have yet to find answers too.

1. How do ducks with slipped tendons tend to hold their leg and or how much range of motion do they have?

2. If it's a slipped tendon, do I splint it? And should I do anything with the leg before splinting? What's the best way to splint and such?

3. I have not found ANY diagrams of duck legs muscles and tendons so far, which is frustrating. How do I determine if it's a slipped tendon, I have done quite a bit of reading about this already but a reiteration would be helpful.

4. Why does cold weather exist? (Frustrated this is happening when I can't use the hose and have to worry about Duck getting chilled after water therapy.)

Duck hardly puts weight on her left leg which is the injured one, often when she stands she lightly steps with it a bunch (don't know how else to describe it). I don't think I have heard popping or anything from it, hardly any warmth or swelling from what I can tell anytime I check. She eats and drinks and when in baths she does normal duck stuff. Poops are normal, and due to the season hasn't been laying (even before this injury I believe).
She can barely walk, often her left foot goes below her and on top of her right foot. I don't think I see her use it much outside of walking.
She does have some mild bumblefoot (from before this) I think on both feet. But it's never made her limp to much (plan to treat that when possible too).

Duck has been in her pen with her best friend Rose, most of the time. Some days I let her be able to go wherever she wants but I try to keep her penned up. She's been on all flock and gets a bit of duckling starter grower occasionally.

I plan on giving peas to her daily again, I think my durvet vitamins b complex isn't good anymore probably? I have to check. She gets daytime in a pen outdoors with a trusted duck and nighttime a pen in the breezeway with no other ducks in her pen, but does have other ducks near and visible at night. She also has water at night.

I hope that all was understandable and not poorly written. I am open to possibly getting her to a vet, but we don't really have any waterfowl ones nearby I don't think. So I plan to do my best at home. I hope I covered everything, I want her to feel better and soon.
Thank you for reading this and for any advise.

I went out and put Duck in warm water, deep enough for her to swim in and extend her legs. She scratched her head with her left leg multiple times and did well in the water.
I gave her some peas while in her bath.

Hello,
I have a duck with what seems like almost the same problem, did you ever discover what was wrong?
How’ve your ducks been? I was going to suggest bumping up calcium as well. Our water leaches calcium (didn’t know until we had it tested), so I feed Layer pellets and free choice crushed seashells. I also have “emergency “ calcium which is a spray for reptile food, easy to squirt in their bills. A left side only limp could also be reproductive - that side is the functioning ovary.

She is still limping, we just got her and her previous owner thought she had a sprain. I didn't think of boosting calcium, she is eating mazuri breeder, free choice oyster shells and we supplemented b complex and niacin but no change so far. I will give extra calcium a try, I have both liquid and crushed egg shells that I give to our chickens as a boost.
I have been treating it as a slipped tendon as I can certainly feel more tendon on that side but I am not positive if its out of place as I cant feel any on the other side. I have been gently stretching her leg and getting her in a deep bath 2x a day as right now she just has a shallow tub in her quarantine pen. This weekend we are adding a deeper pond for her so she can swim more each day, hopefully that helps as well.

What kind of duck is she? Heavier breeds can have leg issues. Hard to keep them mobile and their weight down, swimming would be best since it’s exercise without impact. Maybe get her to exercise while swimming? Mine like floating treats and they dive for them if they sink.
Mine don’t like the oyster shell pebbles much, I use Flaked (basically crushed seashell chips) and put a water source nearby, the ducks vacuum it down.
Don’t give up, I think the tendon usually ends up getting worse, where if she hasn’t gotten worse or stays the same, there’s always a chance she can heal or at least still have a good ducking life ;)

This is good to hear! She has not gotten worse so that gives me hope. She is quite small, mallard crossed with black Swedish and about 3lbs. My toddler has been having a blast tossing the waterfowl floating pellets to her so she is getting some good exercise that way. I am hopeful she can recover and if not we will build her a little brace. She is a sweet girl and deserves a good ducking life and will get it here. Thanks for all the ideas and encouragement!

Hello,
I have a duck with what seems like almost the same problem, did you ever discover what was wrong?
Well, we got her to the vet on the 11 iirc, they took x-rays and found that she has a broken femur. They gave us some pain meds for her. They don't think there's anything they can do.

I don't know exactly how describe the break/fracture. We don't have any waterfowl specialists near us as far as I am aware.

We used the last of her plan meds yesterday, they didn't seem to help much, the vet said she's not super painful now since its been some time after the break happened.
On her right exterior toe towards the end of it (I think there's a pic in previous posts) it is bent inwards, the vets said it looks arthritic on the x-ray. She ended up breaking her left hind nail at some point before or during the trip to the vet.

I don't know what to now, I want to find a way to fix her up, but I don't think it's possible or reasonable for her. But I am unsure of how long we should wait.

Duck has also been on All flock for most of this year, and the last few months she's gotten little bits of Purina duckling and goslings starter grower, And some peas too.
She molten pretty well this year, I have never supplemented my flock during molts I always want to but never happens.

She stopped laying eggs a while before the break thankfully.

As of now she has still been kept in her pen with her best friend Rose, and one of my drakes who is bonded to those two hangs out on the outside of the pen very often. Duck gets 1-2 swim times a day in warm water for at least 15 minutes each time. She still eats but I don't know how much she actually gets for sure, but she hasn't lost weight (based on how heavy she feels I cant exactly weigh her). She has access to all flock all through the day currently, and at night she gets a small amount of all flock or the duckling food sometimes with a bit of Nutri-drench and it's always moistened. She also has access to water at night as well.

She's been preening still and stays waterproof as long as I keep up with the swim time.

I think I got most of what I needed to say here.

I hope you figure out whats wrong with you duck! My duck has had no swelling anywhere this whole time. As far as I have felt, but we can hear and kind of feel a bit of crunchieness in her femur sometimes.

Thank you for your reply!
So sorry for your girl, ours also has no visible swelling and I cant feel any break but maybe it is too subtle to feel? I have had no luck with Avian vets near me knowing anything about ducks but maybe I should get her x rays.
We are doing about the same, 2x daily baths and keeping her with just her friend, she still eats well. Hope your girl continues to preen and stay as happy and healthy as she can, I did read one story of a duck healing from a leg fracture all on their own.

Thank you! Duck is still doing the way she's been since the injury.

I wish I could have gotten copies of the x-rays.

Wishing the best for your duck! Hope you are able to find answers.
