My vet informed me that my barred rock has coccidosis and intestinal parasite. She deals mostly with dogs/cats, but is the only vet around that will look at chickens. She said it was up to me wether or not I wanted to medicate, but that since its an adult, it most likely will not kill the chicken. I ve read differing opinions on what to do. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this, and what should I do? Thank you

I would medicate all chickens,if one has it then the rest probably have as well. Cocci is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract, spread by droppings, which get into feed/water via droppings. Can be spread by birds, your clothes/shoes(bringing a new strain into your area that your birds have no immunity to)adding new birds to your flock. There are 9 strains of Cocci, and it can kill very fast. Very common for chicks/older chickens to have an overload. Purchase Corid(amprolium) Dose for Corid 20% powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water, dose for Corid 9.6% liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat ALL chickens for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication)give vitamins after treatment is complete.

Can you eat eggs from a hen that has cocci? I am starting treatment later today after I pick up the medication.
Yes, I think you can. You can also do it even while treating with Corid, as Corid is not an antibiotic and does not leave a harmful residue in the eggs--it works by depriving the coccidia of certain vitamins.

If you're using the Corid liquid, there is no withdrawal period (you can eat the eggs while treating). If using the powder, there is a one day withdrawal period (wait one day after the end of the treatment before eating eggs again).

Treat with safeguard as well to kill other types of worms.
