Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Pics
Quail eggs:
Day 4 for me - I candled some of eggs, probably should have waited but just received my brand new candler (didn't candle any for my first hatch as my flashlight couldn't show anything in those spotted quail eggs). It looks like none of the cracked shipped eggs developed. Some of the grocery store eggs have veins so that's a nice surprise.

I'll candle again in 10 days right before lockdown!
I'm on day 3 with quail and I don't see anything yet. Well I see this red line thing. I have no idea what it means.

I just got an email from my local post office saying that the eggs I ordered which were shipped only three days ago from Centralia, MO are now at my local post office and will be delivered by this afternoon. They are Old English Game, Regular Grays. I have hatched incubated eggs before, but not in many years. I used to get pretty good results before, about 80% hatch rate. I have a new incubator and I've had it set up for several days. I'm hoping for the best. I will candle the eggs later on today when I get them, to try to determine what condition thy're in. Meanwhile I'm reading everything I can hear on this forum.
Glad to have you join us! I just started incubating again after taking a break for a year, and I'm also trying a new incubator. I found this info a good basic refresher, although I don't take everything in it as gospel. (That is, I will assist a chick, and I will try to hatch some unpromising looking eggs.) Overall, though, very good info:

Here is the egg that I thought was dead. :(
I wouldn't beat yourself up over this either. I've mistakenly culled a living chick before, and it was tough and I was very upset, but it was a honest mistake and I learned from it. This is an imperfect process and you do the best you can. :hugs

Shipped, not shipped, it don't matter. You're candling and hatching, I'm interested!

I think it may be harder to see through those spotted quail eggs when you candle.
They are horrible.
Who put the dang spots on them? :barnie
