Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Pics
How long do you let unpromising eggs stay in the incubator?

I leave them in until the developing eggs are unmistakably progressing, so that I can be certain that if anything were happening with the 'duds' that it would be clearly visible.

That's my answer as well. I think I've left my "maybes" in as long as Day 12/13, until I was positive they were duds.

Oh, and examine and sniff them carefully. Any ooze or funky smell, it's time to go immediately

Emphatically that.

Gone all day, so my eggs didn't get turned since this morning... I gave them a flip, then let them settle for a little while. Candled, and I think I'm going to extend possible hatch date from 19th/20th to 19th/22nd, with a probable on the 21st. It doesn't look like these will pop on day 19 like the first bunch did. Other than that, though, there was movement in all 13 eggs.

Thank heavens I've never had to deal with a bad-smelling egg in the incubator... maybe because I do toss the unlikely ones between Day 7 and Day 12. That seems to be they way to go. Thanks for your reply!

Thanks, that's helpful. It's pretty much what I've been doing, too, so that's reassuring.

I had one that gagged me when I opened the incubator for the first turn of the day on day 6 of incubation. It only had a tiny bit of brown slime inside when opened... but it reeked like rotting meat. That was so unexpected that I thought maybe my nose was malfunctioning, and had someone else come sniff it for me to be sure. They confirmed the stink, so it was culled and examined. The shell also turned a weird dead greyish white, instead of the normal creamy Serama egg color.

I do not look forward to ever having to sniff a rotten egg.
:sick

I *know* we aren't supposedly to candle daily. I am new to this experience, and I am wildly intrigued by what's going on inside my eggs!

Perfect little toes! Oh! So cute!
We are suppose to do what ever we want.
I think it is perfectly fine for newbies to candle daily.
It is fascinating to see the daily changes.

Eww! I've never opened a hatching egg. You are braver than I am.
