Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

ok, this might seem like a silly question, but does anybody else is worried that candling might be hurting little embryo's eyes? Every time I press this flashlight against it, they start to wiggle around. I read that they do not get eyelids until day 10...

I have never worried about it. I doubt they have any eyesight at all that early, there is a lot of eye, nerve, and brain development that needs to happen to "see" something. Most likely, the chick is responding to the movement of the egg. You just can't see the movement until you put a light to the egg.

Absurdity: yesterday, the city sends us 'civic emergency' text alerts to let us know the tap water is contaminated, and should not be ingested - especially by children or pets. This information hit the news a few hours before the alert reached us, and now all the local grocery stores are out of water.

With chicks due to hatch anytime, I ended up ordering a case of Icelandic bottled water from Amazon with one-day shipping, so I don't flood the babies with neurotoxins. I guess the chicks will be honorary Icelandics, now! I can't believe I actually found a way to make these shipped-egg chicks even more expensive...

Yes, they will let us know in a couple of days if they have been able to reduce the cyanotoxins, which are coming from an over abundance of algae in a local lake. Who knew that algae can cause neurological harm and damage livers?

I love hearing all the excitement today! Success for many of you! Yay!

Day 6 here. I see movement in 5 eggs!! A couple more look ok. A few blood rings (no smell) and a lot of clear eggs. Tomorrow will be 1st cull. . I will probably end up with 8-10 (out if 26) left in bator tomorrow. Happy about my little Wiggler's! Wish their air cells had reattached, but they did not, so they will all be staying upright. I prefer laying them on their sides, but it is what it is at this point.

With hatching due tomorrow, I'll soon have my two little incubators freed up - plus the big incubator that my brother just sent me as a gift! Hatching is so addictive.

I'm considering Buff Brahmas, because I love my big, cuddly Dark Brahma so much. Is there a type of chicken, duck, pheasant or something else you really want to hatch?

Oh, yes. Lavender Ameraucana bantams... Sumatra bantams (those are HARD to find!)... more Silkies... maybe some White Sultans....

I really wanted some Svart Honas... but after considering how hot it is here during the summer, I decided that all-black birds may not be a good idea. I worry about my black Silkie - she stringently avoids being out in the sun on hot days for more than a few minutes at a time, so I know it's got to be pretty hot for her. Any more Silkies I get I want to be colored or white, rather than black.
