Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Pics
I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep! Here are my first two wet, stumbling little chicks - the noisy Appenzeller and the little Sebright who was the first to pip. They were very excited to see me, and started crashing around bumping eggs, including the one with the pip at the wrong end. That wrong-end Svart Hona hasn't made any further progress, but since it's not even 21 days, really, I think I'll leave the egg until dawn.

Once again, it's that choice to assist or not, and I think at this point I will let the chick do what it can.

The babies probably won't dry off that well in the humid incubator, but since I have to leave for work this morning, I'd rather have them stay there for now. At least I know they're warm and safe.

When to sleep for a couple of hours, but I'm up again. No further progress on the one that pipped, but two more of the Maran eggs have now pipped. One of the pips is just a big crack. Still no peeping. The one with crack is the first one. The second picture is the 3rd pip and is the egg in the back and the pip is on the underside of the egg.

So precious. I hope your Svart makes it out by dawn.

I'd really like to seem a little progress on my pips too!

It was very difficult to hear the Svart Hona with that little Appenzeller yelling, and hard to see with all the condensation, so I quickly opened the incubator and swapped out the Svart egg for a warm, wet paper towel. The humidity only dropped from 71 to 69, so I think there was no harm done.

Holding the Svart egg, I could hear the chick peeping strongly, and I could also see a spot of blood on the membrane where the chick pipped. So the chick is breathing and is not ready to hatch. I put the egg back. It's not the time to assist.

There's another pip (#4) from the other Appenzeller.

It's hard leaving the hatch to go to work! Good luck to all. I'll check in later today to see how everyone is doing.

You did great. Upside down eggs seem to rest longer cuz they are just taking their first breath upon external pip. Instead of making an internal pip. So give it longer. I give mine a min. Of 16 hours on a normal external pip. 24 can be normal. With an egg at the wrong end, hatching can take 48 hours, but it is hard to know if it 8s getting weak, so I would probably assist a bit after 30 hours.
