Adventures in Selling Eggs

Gosh, Congrats!

Wish I could get $3 or better yet the $8 a dozen.

around here it's $1.50 to $2.00 on average.

I wish I could do something like that. Around here so many farmers and people with eggs. I know of 2 produce places that have refridgerators outside with a sign eggs donations please.

We've been selling ours here in the St. Louis Mo area for $2.00 a dz, and $3 for an 18 pack, but I don't consider our eggs to be jumbo just large. My wife recently started the barter system with a lady at her daycare that I thought was interesting. Her husband works at a paper goods place, so Nancy (my wife) came home the other day with a bundle of toilet paper for a dz eggs and says that there is a list of products to choose from in the future. Not too bad in my opinion. She also uses the steady flow of daycare customers as our source for empty cartons, we have more than enough for now. Its all about networking.

The cartons are actually stamped with our family name, town and zip code, plus an organic certification statement, just no phone number. There are only two listings for our family name in the phone book, my name and my mother's name. I figured they weren't trying too hard to reach us.

Our carton labels have our phone number and our web address (which has contact info all over it) and we have STILL gotten people saying that they could not find us when they needed more eggs.

So, what breed of chicken do you have that is laying you all these jumo eggs? They sound pretty impressive.

$3.00/dz for organic eggs would be a very good price here in Florida. I'm not surprised you sold out.

I noticed last night while in the grocery the store brand organic eggs were $4.00/dz and they were only large size.

I was reluctant to start at $3 but couldn't justify lower because of the carton cost. I soon found no one complained. Researching, I found all eggs at Whole Foods sell for from $3-6 a doz. Some are just cage free at that price. mac in abilene with certified organic could go a lot higher especially delivered.
Now I have my cartons in circulation and they are $3.50 or $3.00 with carton exchange. I use the clear plastic and the label has a picture of my hens in the field eating bugs and grass with a little blurb about the benefit of pastured eggs. I think I'll add my cell phone number.
And Chick Charm, tongue is delicious. If from organic grass fed and finished beef, I marinade it and eat it raw.

It's the same here though. There are organic layer houses all over the area, plus many of the Amish farms have eggs for sale, not to mention the 79 cent a dozen promo eggs that are sold by the regional gas station chain that has convenience stores in every community. I have tried selling them in the rural areas and it's a hard sell as many just tell me that they get eggs from family or neighbors. My wife drives 25 minutes into a small city of 50,000 and hits up the business areas, but it's hardly a large urban center like San Diego where some people are nutty enough to pay $8 a dozen.

That they are Jumbo and Super Jumbo eggs is a huge plus as everybody oohs and ahhs at the size. We have a large flock of commercial strain red sex-links and those eggs are the just the largest 2 to 3% of what we are producing right now. We'll progressively get more and more as the flock ages and the average egg size gets larger.
