You cant stick ANY dog in that type of existance, and think it is gonna be fine with anybody. Let alone kids! These are the trash that like to get pits to make themselves look tougher! (We call this Small P*n*s Syndrome around here.) THEY are what give pitbulls a bad rep. And it's just recently pits. In the 70s and early 80s it was Rotti's. The y get the "tough" dog to overcompensate for other short comings, and keep it locked away only to be brought out and shown off on the occasional visit from other loser friends. MANY of them around here. I feel bad for the dog, but unfortunatly it sounds like he needs to be put down. ALONG with dear BIL...

That's exactly what I meant. Any type of dog like a pit that needs proper obedience training, and constant interaction with humans, and other dogs. From day one those types of dogs need training, and socialization. I train german shepherds, and those dogs can also become dangerous if not bred properly, and trained properly. I have had several breeds of abused and neglected dogs brought to me over the years. It's not just pit bulls, but unfortunately, like you said, this one may be past the point of intervention.

Your a pig! Ever see a dog accually die from that! REAL SLOW!! Here's a REAL winner here! Your just as ignorant as the OP's BIL!

I agree that is a vile suggestion. However, there is a report button for this very reason. Rather than call a person out, report them. Let the mods handle it.

Please stop calling members names and flaming. It's extremely offensive. Please learn how to communicate your feelings without being so rude.

I apologize to the OP...but not anybody else. If thats the type of advise thats gonna get posted than maybe the thread needs to get locked. I live in an area where THAT seems to be the solution all too many times. My neighbors dog was given antifreeze in a case of "mistaken identity". Idiot actually came over and apologized and told him that!

Bragabit, that dog would have already been an SSS by now if it were me. I certainly wouldn't wait for my child to be mauled. The fact that it's family makes the situation even worse.

Is moving away from those people a viable option for you?

Here in Humboldt Co., Ca. we passed a LAW...NO DOG IS TO REMAIN TIED IN A YARD FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS. The 1st offense is a warning, susequent infractions are fined. The fines start low and can go up significantly each time the owners are caught. Seems like more people have fences - less tied up dogs, for sure!

The only thing I can think of in your situation would be to try and win over the dog's trust. Really good treats - teach "sit", "stay", etc. Of course, you'll be on your own side of the fence, but the dog should start to associate seeing you with good things. The older kids should be present when you do this, but not too close to the fence for awhile. You may become better friends with the dog than you are with the relatives (and better friends than the dog is with it's owners)! This way, if the dog ever does (god forbid) get out, it shouldn't attack - it should sit for a treat, if your training works!
Hope you can try it. Good luck.

This is excellent advice. Call around and see if someone will act on a complaint of animal neglect, maybe even cruelty. The dog needs to be rehomed or killed; nothing else will resolve this.

Sounds like that dog is an accident, looking for a place to happen! Of course you are very right to be concerned. Its their fault that poor dog is like that. First off, you don't chain a dog up like that, and expect it to be socialized! Dogs become quite aggressive when leashed or chained, I've learned that with my own dogs. On leash, that is. It figures that animal control would say something like that. What, are they WAITING for an incident to do something about it? I'd say, yes!
