Advice for chick's swollen vent? UPDATE message #13

I should try some antibiotic ointment. I started giving him some antibiotic in his water yesterday.

I noticed this on Monday night, so we're on day two. The swelling has gone down a bit and he's still really upset about his jail cell, so he's feisty. That's another good sign.

I've had this happen a couple of times with chicks after I've cleaned off their pasty butts. Thankfully for mine, it has gone down within a day or two. This time, I had put some ointment on his vent and that did seem to make the pecking at it (by him and the others) worse. I'm not sure I'd do that again.

Here's an update. Little blue has a good appetite. He cheeps a lot to his friends on the other side of the bars (he's in solitary confinement for his own protection), he's pulling at his back butt feathers much less, and he drank from my eye-dropper. I just bought some medicated crumbles and he ate with gusto.

His vent looks very sore and swollen. I'm wondering if I should give him a good soak. Do you know what temperature the water should be? I don't want to stress him any more than necessary, but I've been putting neosporine on his butt for three days now, and his back end looks so matted and gross.

Would it hurt to soak him? Of course I'd want to dry him well and keep him from getting chilled. Still, it seems like he's so fragile...

lol this is post is from 10 years ago but i am just now reading it!😂 my chick is having the exact same problem right now and it’s swollen red. i’ve put vasaline on it and it still has a normal appetite it’s just so small compared to the rest. i was curious as to how your chick turned out and if you had any tips?

mines about three weeks old and it’s all healed! i used cortisone cream (or vasaline) and applied it to the swollen area and gave her a warm butt bath every day to clear the clogged areas and eventually it went down and she didn’t get picked on. I would recommend though separating her until the swelling goes down (just be sure to watch her and make sure she’s eating etc and isn’t stressed from the separation) my chick that had the swollen vent was also a hard to thrive chick so it was already weak and tiny so i also gave her finely cut up boiled egg, tofu, and some nutri drench, and all that seemed to help. i’m so sorry to hear about your problem but i hope it all goes well for you and you should keep me updated! hugs ❤️

also when the swelling appeared to be going down on my chick i stopped putting cream on her and cleaning her so her butt could just heal and the feathers would get a chance to grow back

Same here. I am new to having chickens, and one of my six day old babies is struggling. It had pasty butt earlier today which I cleaned according to the instructions. I noticed it was protruding, but only a little at the time. I check it a couple of hours later, and it is protruding more, and I noticed another chick pecking at its rear. I have again cleaned the area, applied Preparation H, and isolated it. He/she is practically falling asleep in their feet and chirping often as if in pain. He/she was one of the most vigorous eaters and consumed plenty of water (the water has quick chick in it which is an electrolyte supplement), but I haven’t seen it consume anything in the last couple of hours. Any additional advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

My chick which had swollen vent is about 9 weeks old now and is all normal! here is what i did: If your chick has pasty butt clean immediately. I then applied cortisone cream to it. Prep H is filled with too many toxins and many poultry experts suggest against it. If your chick is being pecked it is probably best to isolate it but make sure it can still see its friends. It took about 3 days for my chicks swelling to go down then once the swelling was down i left it alone with no cream so it could heal on it’s own without agitation. My chick that had it also was the runt and wouldn’t eat as well. i recommend feeding it boiled egg and tofu (helps with hydration). put the chick back with its friends with supervison and place the foods on carboard and let the other chicks eat it as well (the carboard will make a loud noise and hopefully attract the sick chick) if all goes well the chick will join them too eat. I gave my sick chick nutri drench as well (a supplement that helped it gain the vitamins she needed) I hand fed it to her to make sure she was getting it. I know this is a lot but i just want to send some encouragement your way and wish you luck! let me know if you have any questions ❤️
