Hi everyone,
My threenager snuck out to the grower to visit our various age homegrown chicks and may have (can’t get a straight answer out of her) shut the littles one’s leg in the door. I found her laying down and she won’t put weight on it. Looks like there may be a scrape just above the joint (her knee? Do chickens have knees?) and the joint itself looks purplish under the skin and a bit swollen. Any advice on how I can help her? I cleaned it and put a bit of triple antibiotic ointment (without pain reliever) on the scrape, brought her into the inside kitty crate we use for emergencies, and gave her some crumble on the ground next to her and some water with electrolytes. Should I wrap it? Can I give her a smidge of pet aspirin? Should I bring her sister in for company? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! 2EBD28CB-B0F5-4F48-B628-D070508C782D.jpeg

It looks fairly painful, but I would not give any pain medicine so that she stays off the leg, to let it rest and heal. Does it appear broken? Make sure that she is near food and water. A chicken sling or chair may be of help unless she tries to escape it. They are good for periods throughout the day and then let her rest in between and at night on the floor. Here is a link that has pictures and a video:

Thank you. What would it look like if it was broken? She’s nibbling on some crumble I put down hear her and she will take water from the dropper a little at a time when I offer it, and I also have a dish of water in there as well. Do you think she will get depressed without her sister?

The other chicken may peck at her red wound. You can try them together, but if there is any pecking, the other one can be outside of the crate where they can see each other for visits. Do any of the bones seem out of place? It may just be scraped and swollen. A vet on Monday am could xray it if in doubt. Cleaning the wound twice a day and applying the antibiotic ointment would be what I would continue to do.

No, the bone looks normal, just swollen. We live in the foothills and don’t have a vet nearby so we rely heavily on country medicine and this amazing forum.
