Hello everyone,

This is my first post so nice to meet you all. I require some urgent advice on changing eggs from one incubator to the next.

Basically this is my first time incubating eggs and i bought a dirt cheap mini incubator off ebay and whilst it seems to be keeping a solid 37.5c the electrics on it are exposed and I am so worried about fire hazard I went on Amazon this morning and purchased the popular Brinsea Eco Mini incubator which should arrive tommorow.

I have had my eggs in this cheap chinese incubator since wednesday 16th, and the eggs sit pointy side down. I see on the Brinsea they are supposed to sit on their sides, so at this stage in the incubation will it be ok to transfer my eggs to the new Brinsea and place them on their sides? or might this cause problems?

Your advice is very much appreciated, and I look foward to hearing from you very soon.

Kind regards and thanks,

Matt

Hello, I have no experience hatching, but wanted to extend a Welcome

Hopefully those with experience will give you some advice here very soon.

And wish you luck with the incubator and position changes.

You are welcome.

You should also post under new members to get a proper welcoming and maybe earlier views of your question. Many of the greeters have hatching experience.

You can copy and paste the post to that forum.

I personally started mine off on the sides with manual turning, couldnt get temps high enough and switched to my brooder and auto egg turner(pointy end down) on day 4 or 5. I had almost all develop(definite movement day 16 in 21 of 28 originally) so they will probably be fine. I only had 1 egg to end up with a funny shaped air cell and I don't think they were even turned before incubation(all week or less old when I set them). So I think it would be fine. Of course not sure how many will hatch and if my day 16 is more like a day 12 development wise due to low temps in beginning but finger are crossed.
Good luck with the hatch!

Hi Southernhusky,

thanks for your reply. So you think that going from being stood up to on their side should do them little harm at this stage then? Also whats the technique with manual turning with eggs lying on their sides?

Thanks again!

I don't personally own one but yes the eggs lay on their sides in the Brinsea Mini. I don't think it will be a problem, I don't remember ever seeing the broody hens worry about egg position. Once it arrives and the temperature is steady just move them over as you turn them. I don't know if your original incubator was self turning bug the mini Eco is not. Good luck for a successful hatch.

The biggest thing when touching, moving, hand turning eggs is to wash your hands first. The other thing is not to drop them. Other than that it's no problem.

Bacteria from hands can get into porous shells compromising your hatch so wash hands prior to handling.

It will be just fine to transfer the eggs to their sides. If you do not have an egg turner in your new Brinsea, of course you do know that you'll have to turn the eggs 3 times a day by hand. I'd recommend putting an "x" on one side and an "O" on the other so you know if they have been turned or not. Just make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eggs, and make sure your Brinsea is at proper stable operating temperature before you move the eggs in. Hope you have a successful hatch! :)
