I would like to start by saying this seems to be the best place to learn how to raise your chickens.. my first experience raising chickens was not very good I ended up buying older chickens like three year old hens that I didn't know we're past their Prime. Now that I know little bit more about them I want to just say that im on a budget so im looking for the best bang for my buck so to speak. Please keep in mind i have room on lot but not acres to spare if you know what i mean?. I want to raise a small flock of dual-purpose chickens and eventually be able to have a rooster and hens make chicks. What breeds do you guys recommend I only want to raise about 6 chickens total. Thank you so much for your time and your advice and your efforts I appreciate it very much have a wonderful summer.

1. Chantecler
2. Australorps
3. Easter Eggers
4. Plymouth Rock
5. Wyandotte
6. Rhode Island

Where do you live?
I named the breeds that do best in North Dakota, and are dual purpose.

*An Australorp hen holds the record for number of eggs laid in one year

Hi and welcome to BYC. I'd suggest checking out the Breeds Section, as well as asking on your local thread - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you about what dual purpose birds do best in your area and whats available from hatcheries / breeders in your area. If you do plan to get a roo, i would suggest adding more females as a 1:5 ratio could lead to over-mating which will stress your girls.

All the best

There is a good discussion on dual purpose breeds here that may interest you:

When you're ready to purchase your flock, have a look in the Buy~Sell~Trade section for birds for sale in your area:
