Chick can't walk. It is only 17 hours after hatch and it had to be helped out. Broody got off the nest and eggs went cold---went to throw out and hear chirping so we put it on warm washlothes and heating pad and it hatched. (day 24) She is lively and loud but cant stand yet. Has started what seems to be paddleing with her feet in front of her. I have tried some pediellyte but not sure which direction to go. Anyone have any suggestions?? even a suggestion of what to look up would help.
Thanks

Hi AZ_HenHouse,

Firstly, I'd recommend you sit back and ask yourself how much you're prepared to do? Would you look after a special needs bird, or are you hoping this one has minor issues and will come good on its own?

I don't mean to be at all cruel (the opposite). It's just that if a bird is going to be well, I usually find it makes the effort on its own (with the exception of short term complaints like splayed leg, where the legs can't stay together underneath the bird... A band-aid helps that.)

17 hours after a difficult hatch isn't as long as it sounds. As long as the brooding area is warm enough (not too hot because this little one can't get away) you're giving it a decent chance. If it's still not able to stand in about 12 hours it might be time to think about euthanasia. They can survive quite well, without food or water, on the remains of the egg yolk inside them for 2-3 days (though 3 would perhaps be pushing it).

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear,
Erica
