Hi,
My babies a RIR cross chicks 2 weeks old with a broody mother hen.

They are getting to big for there current cage so I want to move them into a larger wooden dog kennel.

Mother hen appears to have red mites.

What is the best oil for chick health and mother hen to coat the kennel with.

The old lady up the road says used engine oil??

Kennel to be used.

Used engine oil = Hugely bad idea.
Just for future reference, don't seek her out for any information in the future. She may be able to provide advice about rusty metal or weed killing.

Permethrin dust with a second application a week later.
Burn all the bedding in their current quarters.
I never confine a broody and chicks to a cage. They need to be able to forage and dust bathe.
You probably want to cure this problem before you let them infect the main coop.

What about for weather proofing the kennel?

Paint is the way to go. It will have to dry out first though. If much is weak, that wood should be replaced.
If any of the wood is rotted, there is a product called 'rotted wood stabilizer'.
