Barred Rock..hands down...sweetest, quietest, hardiest, pretty, big fat hens laying big fat brown eggs daily...to me, these are the best of the breeds for egg laying and personality.

I don't think of barred rocks as being fancy at all. They are one of the most common breeds in poultry. They are very nice birds that lay wonderfully well and have sweet dispositions and I am not knocking them one bit, but fancy? No.
There are so many beautiful breeds out there to choose from. I suggest you look around and see what is astheticaly pleasing to you and then procedd to inquire about the positives and negatives of those breeds. I am sure you can narrow down the pool to a few top candidates.

Brahmas are also nice. I'm not sure how their productivity is, but they are friendly and put up with the cold well.

Another breed you might look into is Welsummers.
