My three dear hens are very sick with a respiratory disease and antibiotics in their water didn't work. I have been advised to cull them all, spray everything down with bleach water, and then wait a month before getting any more hens. I never want to have to go through this again, so I really want to make sure any new hens don't catch the same sickness from my environment. I can't bleach my grass, can I? Someone else advised me to wait 6 months before getting new hens. I don't know what to do, and the whole situation is incredibly sad for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh Big Mami, I'm so sorry you are going through this. Have you gotten a true diagnosis for it? If it's Aspergillosis (oh dear, I'm sure that spelling is wrong) it's tough to get rid of - a number of other things aren't so bad - especially if its just some sort of mold that is a result of a damp spring - On the totally negative side, there are things that even bleach won't kill, and you simply need to build your coop and run in a different spot.

Knowing how to get rid of it sure becomes a lot easier if you know for sure what it is

Anyway, even a call to the vet might be worth your time -

good luck and please keep us posted!
