Advice please on a coop

Oh.. Well.. I am mistaken then.

Here is a post of hot weather coops. IF you choose to close them in at night just wire the open end and use a pop door as normal. Be a good idea if you have coyotes in the area or whatnot who might happily munch on your birds. Though they might just do that during the day too.. But be more likely to loose some at night.

Three wall coops does revolve around your climate though if you can actually use one or not. If it drops below freezing often I'd think not. Not my thing though since I live in an ice storm zone, so.... Four walls for me..

Number one...dont rely on chicken wire for protecting your birds. It is cheaper then hardware cloth...but will not keep predators from your flock. So many have learned this lesson the hard way...in the long run, it is soooo worth the extra cost of hardware cloth ...that is my 2 cents worth....good luck on your new coop and your chickens!! and ................

Thank you for all the advice. I will post pics of the finished product and then let me know what you think.
Sorry Darkwolf I didnt seem to sound snooty. Thank for helping me out.

Build an 8 by 8 coop if you can. I started with a 4 by 8 "playhouse" style coop, added a run, added a bigger run, built a couple of other small coops. But I am sooo much happier with a walk-in 8 by 8. I have 6 hens also, so they have plenty of room (with 12 by 12 run). But if I can't get to them first thing, or it is nasty out, they have lots of room to hang out in, and they really do seem to enjoy it. You could have large wall sections with hardware cloth, and removable panels for the summer.

A regular (4-walled) coop should work fine in OC. In my (limited) experience, the chickens don't spend much time inside anyway, just sleeping and laying eggs. Put the coop in the shade and make sure you have enough ventilation and it will be fine. I'm not sure whether you get Santa Ana winds much in OC, but keep that in mind too -- your chickens will probably want someplace nice and secure for shelter from the wind.

There are tons of coop pics here:

Good luck!
