You can train a chicken, to a point, by "pecking" them, as the mama would. I'm way gentler even than the mama would be, but they still seem to get the idea. I have used a rather flimsy weed stalk, one that couldn't possibly cause pain, but is just strong enough that they feel it. I think they get the message.
