Information to questions listed on the Emergencies Thread:
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Lavender orpington, 4 years old, unsure of weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Standing in corner by itself (formerly top hen). Won't eat feed-- not even treats (worms, cheese, etc.). Will drink water. area below the vent is the size of a large tennis ball-- swollen, soft. Poop is liquid with some yellow (see photo).
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 4 days. Moving less each day.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No obvious signs of trauma. Have massaged rear area, nothing hard. Crop seems fine, though her breast bone seems to be poking out a lot.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. N/A.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Ate a worm last night, nothing else. Drinking some water.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Runny. Some yellow.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Homeopathic de-wormer in the water (it's the strongest thing I can get over the counter in California). Anti-bacterial tablets for the water.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Vet is $150 just to book an appointment-- no chicken-specific vet in the area. Have been several times before and they've been not helpful (e.g. advised that I put down one of my birds who ended up recovering the next day).
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Will post photo of droppings. Will follow up with one of rear (though it doesn't show much).
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Run has rice hulls (a recent addition) on top of rocky soil. Coop has some sand and diatomaceous earth. Laying box has straw. Hen sleeps on a roost.
