I have a mix of chicks. And until now no problem keeping them together, but in the next month or so they will be old enough to start laying. I know a lot of people on here have different breeds, so how do I keep them separated for breeding purposes? I have lots of land to make different runs and pen outdoors but do each group need a separate coop or to be divided in the coop. Any help would be appreciated and thanks Karen

If you are going to be breeding for a purpose, then it is best to put the pullets and roos in the pens and coops you want them in for that purpose, eliminate cross breeding and such. So, in answer to your question, Yes... They need separate runs ans coops.

OK thanks that's what I was thinking but hoping I didn't need that many coops.lol Another question for you do you feed in run or coop or both,I have water in coop but not food. chicks always seem starving no matter how I do it.

A gentlemen I recently bought two Bantam buff brahmas breeds many differnet breeds for show...he has a different coop for each breed and a seperate coop for breeding...when he wants two paticular birds to mate he coops them up for a week in the breeding pen!
