Hello. I'm new and jut have a quick question for all you experts out there. Am in the process of hatching my first successful batch of cochin bantams. First one hatched yesterday afternoon and when I woke up this morning I had 4 more and several pipped. I'm at work but my mother in law just called and said all chicks are very wet and lethargic. The humidity in the incubator is 80% and temp is running at a steady 99.5. Could it be that the humidity is to high? I fear letting any out in case of shrink wrapping the pipped eggs.
Thanks for any advise. I've been ease dropping on this forum for a while and found really helpful info every time!

Hello and welcome....so glad you joined BYC

First off ... Congrats on new babies !!!!

If the chicks havent been out of the eggs for very long they will be wet and lethargic for a while. It takes them a bit to fluff up. Dont know what type incubator you have but if it has plugs maybe one of those could be removed to let the humidity lower a bit. Just make sure not to let it get too low. I know it took my cochin chicks a few hours to get really good and fluffy. You may want to post this question on the hatching thread for more expert opinions and quicker responses.

Good luck on the remainder of your eggs :)

Congrats on the hatch! The humidity is a bit high, so see if you if can let some of that out. It would help the chicks dry off quicker.

chicks are wobbly and exhausting from hatching - they can even fall asleep standing up and just topple over. It's hard work finding your way out of an egg with no road map.
