Last month, I picked up this fan https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Tough-Sealed-Motor-Drum-Fan-with-Wall-Mount-20-Inches/334273417 from Walmart. Its a sealed motor shop fan, so it's much safer for in a dusty coop, than a standard motor fan. This thing moves a TON of air! Possibly a negative for some as it blows hard even on low. Not sure about the energy efficiency but I doubt it is very good. I only use it when temps are real high and the birds love it. To have the peace of mind of a sealed motor for that price is great. I have seen a lot of people on here looking to use fans and talking about box fans etc. Don't do it...not when you can get a much safer alternative. I have mine mounted with the hanger hook and it works well also.

I designed my coop so that I'd never need a fan, but I am very glad that you're sharing this because of the fire hazard presented by the use of a household fan in a chicken coop. :)

BTW, I see that you're in Huntingdon. I went to college at Juniata!

People do not realize how easy a fan catches fire when dust gets in the motor! I have a ton of ventilation in a large coop. I don't need the fan either but my birds love it. I don't mind it either since my coop is a walk in and I can step in to slow the sweat down lol.
I grew up one block from Juniata. Were they Indians or Eagles when you went there? Name changed in 94. Trying to age you lol.

Indians. Class of 86. :)

I have an ancient box fan, mounted to be efficient for helping to cool the coop in late afternoon and safe as it's blowing into the coop so it stays clean(no chicken dust on it).

A fan just blowing air around doesn't do much other than maybe keeping flying insects at bay....and making the keeper feel satisfied.

That is a really nice setup you have there! My only thing is those darned box fans...I have experienced two of them burning up before. One in my house. One at work. Both were in low dust situations with no sign of going bad. The one in my house was actually recalled for fire hazard later https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2011/lasko-recalls-box-fans-due-to-fire-hazard. One of the real old ones made with metal blades and screens would be cool to own. All motors have the possibility of catching fire. The problem lies in surrounding it with plastic lol.

I've never had one burn up.
I also don't leave it running all night.

Do you remember Geno Perri? Class of 86. Big time football and track standout. He was my big brother in the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

The name sounds familiar, but I can't bring a face to mind.

I don't do any alumni stuff so I've totally lost track of everything. But I have many fond memories of both college and town.
