After a failed hatch, I'm looking for a new bird that is sort of quieter than ducks. Are quail quieter in general?

After I failed to hatch 6 eggs, I decided I wanted something other than just ducks since they are quite loud and may disturb my neighbors. My main idea is to get button quail because they seem like good pets since they are smaller than my pekins. The only thing I want to know is if they are quiet. If they are loud, please suggest birds that are quiet and make good pets thanks :)

Button quail are definitely quieter than ducks! They are also tiny, about 4" long when fully grown. They are from SE Asia, so they can't handle cold very well.

Coturnix quail are also quieter than ducks, though the males can get loud, especially if you have too many of them.

Buttons and Coturnix quail generally don't require permits, but check with your ag department to make sure. I know they don't need permits in CA or OR.

If you think about any native species of quail (California, bobwhites, for example) you will probably need a permit.

I don't plan on getting bobwhites since they are pretty loud but I also live in a warmer area so that is probably not a problem. Do you know how loud exactly a button quail can get? there have been no good examples on google so I am trying to find information on here.

Coturnix quail would be a great option as they're a little bit less fragile than button quail (I've got both).

My buttons are in my house and rarely make any noise. I've raised coturnix for years in our basement-as chicks, they can be loud when they aren't happy, but as adults they just make little, quiet noises and even the male's crow is much quieter. Not at all like a chicken crow or a duck call.

If I do choose to get quail, do you know what I could do with extra males if I don’t rehome them?
If you keep the males separate in a bachelor flock (away from any hens), they generally don't fight and crow all of the time. It's only really when they can see and interact with hens that they'll start to cause a ruckus. You can also butcher them, it's pretty easy to do.
