After seeing my rooster do the nasty.........

heh, i just saw that 2 weeks ago for my first time. those poor girls!

both young birds and probably the first time for both of them since i had been keeping my cockerel bantam polish in the house the last few weeks. took him outside and he made a b-line straight for the coop full of young girls (and 1, possibly another cockerel). everyone greeted him like he never left, but my bantam salmon faverolle Chloe didn't seem to enjoy him chasing her every time she tried to bend over to eat!

no feathers lost though so i'm thinking he's going to be good on the girls. Sunny, my other cockerel seemed a little disturbed after seeing it and tried chasing him off. i'm wondering how he'll do when it is his turn.

Well I heard FuzzyButt screaming so I ran to the pen to see what was up and Nugget was standing on her,, but pancaked inbetween was Little Foot the Bantam Cochin BR roo! FB was flat on the bottom and Nugget was hanging on to Little Foot's comb! He was screaming too!

You allow that sort of stuff to go on at your place huh? That's illegal in many states you know.

Fortunately for the hens, chicken matings take all of five seconds and the rooster doesn't need to hang around to get his ego built up afterwards.

My RIR, Rocky, is 18 weeks old. He has been after the girls for weeks. They have been screaming and squawking and running. Well, he finally hurt one. It is a buff orpington. He ripped a 2 inch laceration in her neck. I don't know if it is gonna heal well. I have done what I could, without suturing. He is now in solitary confinement, with a new name .... Crock Pot .... We are just fattening him up for a couple weeks. I will not allow a mean roo like that. He is fine with humans, just mean to the girls. His days are numbered.

On the other hand, I have a Cuckoo Maran that is totally a gentleman. Read his story here .... POST # 7 ...

I had silkie cross fighting cocks, growing up in South Africa & many times I would see a roo jump on a hen & another roo jump on him. I think I've even seen ANOTHER one on the pile once or twice

My #2 roo chases anything he can. The past few days I've seen him trying to grab the 3 mo. old guineas. Boy, is he surprised to find they have no feathers on their heads!

I've been wondering if he knows which ones are girls; cuz I sure don't know yet. Hmmm, maybe I'll pay attention to that - a new sexing method?
