After upping protein on Blue Orps Pics comparison

Never heard of one of those Cara. Where do you get it and do you ask for Quail Block. Is it a feed or some time of stick that has something on it?

I've noticed that my birds are poorer and poorer even though the feed still says 18% so I am wondering if they have changed the source of protein and it's no longer as usable in the birds system. My chicks weren't doing well either so I bought a bag of game bird starter, which is higher in protein though I don't have the tag with me to know the %, and added it to their feed. The chicks nearly doubled their size within a week and began feathering like they should have been.

I have found feeds with no animal proteins at all (not even fish meal) are a very poor diet for chickens - especially laying hens.

I have changed to game bird food in my laying house and have seen HUGE improvements in my birds feathering and egg laying.

It's a big block mostly comprised of cottonseed I think. It is about the same size as a salt or mineral block that you would use for horses (about 10" square, weighs 20lbs). It looks like a big brown brick. I got it at my feedstore, it's supposed to be put out for wild quail to keep coveys around. It is a supplement and musn't be fed alone. It is made by Purina (Hi Pro), Purina Mills also make a version with more varied ingredients. It cost $12 and lasts a very long time; my turkeys have had the same one for three months.

Here's the data sheet:

This is the Purina Mills kind:

i USED TO BY A BAG OF GAMEBIRD STARTER AND MIX IN WITH CHICK FEED. I MAY GO BACK TO DOING THAT. i HAVE PLENTY OF EGGS ON HAND RIGHT NOW SO I AM GOING TO CONTINUE THE EGG ROUTINE WITH THESE AS i DON'T HAVE REALLY YOUNG ONES RIGHT AT THE MOMENT

I feed all my birds a Blue Seal Brand feed called Breeder Pellet, they seem to do very well on it. They lay and have grown out nicely on it. I beleive it`s a game bird feed. Twice though my local feed store has been out of stock and I was forced to buy egg-layer pellets, call me crazy but those two times, my laying hens took the week off on laying a short time after eating it. I`m not sure if this info or my 2 cents helps anyone, I guess I just felt like talking. lol

Nice improvement Julie. I feed mine scrambled eggs too, they just love it.
