AGE & GENDER?

I'd agree that one lav is a cockerel, but I've had some very slow developing ones, and some quicker than others. One pullet had me convinced she was a he for about 18 weeks before I gave in and let myself believe she was a pullet (and she turned into a very beautiful grown-up one!) So it is possible to mistake them both ways. I found flock dynamics to be a factor with them.

:fl I keep hoping :fl May just need to wait for the crow or egg  Wonder if it's the LO breeding that make them "harder" to sex? I'm praying ALOT!

I hatched a ton of them. The more there were, the easier they were to tell apart. I could usually guess by head shape when about a week old but they could fool me at times.
Keep us posted!

:thumbsup That's for sure....For several years I helped out a friend raising her hatches (Serama) until they were 6 - 8wks, then she'd take them back. It was alot easier having MORE than a few. I'm just going by the size of it's comb/wattle & how pink for it's age. The other is small like the Buffs but a tinge of pink :( Just need to wait a few more weeks. Will repost pics around the end of the month :fl  :fl

my pullets all have very pink/red combs. but every time I post pics everyone says pullet. I hope there right!!! because I am buying a rooster!! if they aren't:smack

Been "bugging" the person that gave me these, the "plot thickens" .... The BO are hatchery stock, 7wks which I can accept. The LO are private stock (the person that gave me these had sold her LO Flock, these are from that line) therefore I'm not questioning the Cockerel now :(

Agreed I'd keep them until her July order (I had ordered 2 LO pullets) came in. Now to decide whether I want to keep these 4BO & possible 1LO or just the BO or start over

why would that mean its a cockerel?

I'm more certain it's a Cockerel as it's not been sexed. Due to the size of it's comb, wattle development & color, tooks more male than female. Had it been from a hatchery, it would have been sexed, less chance of a male.

What would your reasoning be behind giving up the Lavender Orpington pullet? Just curious, if you're keeping them until July that should be plenty of time to know for certain.

I live in a residential area therefor limited to the amount of pullets I can have/keep. I've always had Buffs, wanting Lavenders for a long time but they're $25+ (shipping kills us living on an Island) and wasn't in the budget.

In my experience, having an even number of chickens works "best" ... No odd man out. I've had odd numbers in the past & found the someone gets "left out". Another thing I've experienced is having 2 of a breed works good ... Again no odd man out. It's just my experience, I've read others have experienced the same but it's just my experience.

Last of all, I've never integrated, my limit is 6 but found 4 in my enclosure (8x1x7) works best with Orpingtons due to their size. Plus I've gotten to the point where young chicks are CUTE but alot more work than one off heat ;) Having to care for my Mom now makes for a full day :hmm
