My wife and I recently decided to raise a few chickens. We got them but didn't know how old they were. They are golden comets. Can someone tell me an estimate of age?

Are they laying eggs? If they are laying close to an egg a day then they are in their first year.

Welcome to BYC! There’s so many helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I’m sure you’ll find this site a very useful resource. Your comets have nice big red combs so I’m guessing they’re point of lay upwards :thumbsup

We got them yesterday and they haven't yet. First time raising chickens. Just curious
I see! You are looking for signs that they will lay that first egg soon.

Comb and wattles get big and red
They start doing the egg Squat--about 10 days to go
They start investigating the nest box--several days to go
Go into the nest box and sing the egg song but no egg--first egg any day!

I was told after changing location it can take up to a few weeks before they lay to get comfortable with the new surroundings
