Can a single rooster thrive living next to the hens in his own pen??
Usually as long as he can see the other birds he's fine. If he can hear them but not see them depression sets in. He has to be able to see and interact, but not necessarily physically mingle.

Usually in this situation I'll give him some treats he can offer to the girls, they come running and he feels like he's part of the flock even when isolated.
 
I got one that I kept in a pretty strict quarantine, because while I thought he was molting, that can cover sins. Kept him there 2 months. Didn't seem to bother him at all. One day I turned him out, let the girls out, and he strutted down the street, almost twirling his cane, and followed the girls home.
