My 6 chicks hatched 4/30. I have 2 WPR, ! BPR (all standard), 2 Welsummer, 1 Easter Egger (all bantam). Although I paid for all hens (and do understand there is an occaisional error), I have been suspicious of my BPR for a few weeks now. She is first to come investigate when I approach, frequently stands "tall", has the beginnings of a red/orange comb.

I have an outdoor "playpen" for them that I put them out into (under supervision for a 2 hrs 2 times a day) while the coop/run is being constructed. It's open bottom, enclosed all around with a removable top. Approximately 24" x 40" and 24" high. The past two days she is jumping/lunging at the other chicks. Kind of like what I have seen in films of fighting. Is this normal or do i maybe have a rooster who is beginning to strut his stuff? A few times he has eyed the top and acted like he wants to fly out but it is covered by wire.

Is this typical growing chick behavior? Is there an average age when roos become apparent?

She's a beauty and would feel sad if she is a he but do have a friend who lives in the backcountry part of my town and has offered to take in any who may be roos.

Thanks in advance for any opinions and help! I love have this place to come to!

It may be a roo or just a dominant hen who wants to establish the pecking order and put herself on top. Fingers crossed it's the latter!
