hello,
I have a flock of one drake, two females and 3 geese. I have recently acquired a new duckling (1 month old I think and nearly fully feathered). My drake is aggressive towards me when I go into the garden, leaving large bruises on my arms. Due to his behaviour I have not been able to introduce the new duckling as he just bites her. Any help/advise would be great.
Thanks x

Are you able to physically restrain him some?Show him that behavior is not okay. I have an older Pekin drake that can be rude at times.

By restraining, what I mean is basically holding him on the ground until he calms down. Place one hand behind the neck and one just in front of his tail. Don't squeeze or press him in to the ground, you don't want to impede his breathing, just hold him.

It's not to hurt him, just remind him you are in charge and his behavior is not acceptable.

@Miss Lydia may be able to provide other options.

That is exactly what I would do and have done. How is the drake brusing your arms? As for the duckling look not touch is best until the duckling is close to adult size and hopefully hormones will be lower.

I have tried to hold him down but even after a while he is so persistent. He runs after me and tries to bite me. If he manages to grab a hold of my arms or somthing he holds on and by the time he lets go I am left with a horrible looking bruise. It has got worse since he had a prolapsed penis and 80% of it turned gangrenous and fell off.

He’s biting my arms and not letting go. The duckling is a smaller breed anyways and I don’t think will grow much bigger

But how is he getting to your arms. Don’t try and pet when he is like this,go out with the broom and when he comes at you put the broom between you and him if he keeps coming use the broom to push him away. Your not hitting him you just keeping him away and letting him know your not going to put up with his nonsense. Also you get on the offense before he has a chance to come after you you go after him your the dominant one here. Take the broom and make him move out of the way. Sweep him away if you have to and keep doing this until he gets the message. Don’t make excuses for why he is doing this he is wanting to dominate he’s a drake. My Muscovy drake would jump on my back when I’d turn to leave I was shocked since I had raised him from just hatched. Members here said kill him others told me what to do and no way could I kill him so everyday we worked on this and he finally learned I was not one of his girls he could conquer. Keep him away from your dogs also. He’s 8 yrs old now and rarely do I have to remind him he’s not the boss. The key is consistency. He bites you flatten if he comes back you do it again, you be the aggressor at least once or twice a day.

I don’t pet him when he’s like that. He gets to my arms when I feed them and top up their water. I have tried the holding him down but he continues to try bite me. The broom does work but the minute it is put down he tried to bite again

That’s where you have to keep at it until he walks away. And if you have to stop in the middle of topping off water and feed and push him away with the broom do it. You should see my drake challenge my husband but my husband won’t follow through he will push him away or toss him in the pool but as soon as the drake comes back my dh just leaves the area.
