So, my grandmother has 5 hens and 1 rooster. The rooster has never been aggressive or anything but these past couple of months I’ve noticed him attacking one of the hens. I’ve seen her feathers all over the place and at first we though it’s just her molting but he continues to attack her and I’m wondering if that’s the main cause to her feather loss.
She’s become afraid of the other hens as well and is shy and afraid to eat. I try putting food out for just her and she’s too scared to eat it. When she does try to come over and eat she either does it furthest away from the male or he runs at her and chases her off.
I don’t know if this is normal behavior or what’s going on. My grandmother says she’s got no clue either and is considering even removing the rooster and giving him to someone else that wants him. I really don’t want that to happen so I’m wondering if there is anything we can do or that might explain this behavior.
We even considered she may be sick but she really doesn’t show any signs of sickness other than losing her feathers and she has stopped laying eggs these past few months —since he has been attacking her—.
**Also we had recently within the past maybe 3-4 months moved them to strictly inside their pen instead of allowing them out into the fenced area. I’m not sure if maybe the confined space could be a cause or if he had been this way before with her and we never noticed because they were able to stay so apart.
