Hello BYC community! I have an issue that I need advice on that I didn't see posted already. I have two Roosters, a Gold Laced Wyandotte and a Cream Legbar rooster who share the same large run area. We don't have anymore room to expand the pen and can't afford the building materials anymore to build a separate area in the pen. Our Cream Legbar rooster used to be the dominate rooster, but just recently that has changed. Now the Gold Laced Wyandotte is the the leader and is aggressive to the chickens and 3 ducks in the run. I don't like killing animals, and I don't want to kill the Wyandotte rooster but I want natural born chicks and I heard Cream Legbar roosters are sterile. What should I do? If I have to I will kill him. I just don't want to take his life if there is a way of fixing this problem. He is not aggressive to humans, yet......Thanks in advance

How old are the roosters? If they are mature and not cockerels , I would consider removing the Wyandotte from the flock. How many hens do you have. Two males may just be too much for your flock. If Cream Legbar roosters are all sterile, how would there be more Cream Legbars?

They are both two and a half years old. I have 24 hens of different breeds. I too thought the sterile roosters was odd, but I was basically mentioning that to see if anyone else had heard about Cream Legbar rooster sterility. The cream legbar rooster is very docile and protective of the flock.

A big problem with animal lovers having chickens is roosters. A lot of people have no interesting in killing a live animal, it is part of who they are. Then there are roosters that can really ruin the whole chicken experience, unless you can come to grips with the idea that most cockerels' lives are short. And that a good life, and a quick short end is not a bad way to go. If you have no interest in eating him, bury him and plant a rose bush, call it good.

I am with the others, cull that rooster. He is stressing you and the flock. Always solve for peace in the flock. Your flock is much healthier.

But I too am assuming that the Cream Legbar can produce chicks, and at least 50% of those chicks will be rooster chicks... and the more roosters you have, the more chance you have of it going wrong. And sure as nothing, you will be back in this situation, too many roosters, poor mannered roosters, or aggressive roosters.

Getting chicks is fun, but you have to work chicken math both ways, if you add, you need to subtract, the coop/run is pretty much a constant size.

Good luck,

Mrs K

I always try to give an unwanted or just extra rooster away.
Culling is culling. Whether you eat him or not.
Remove him, give him away for a chance to have his own flock or eat him..
(I dont eat chicken anymore).
LoL
Thats why I give mine away

Get him some blinders. A $2 piece of plastic will end all your troubles. I put them on an Ayam Cemani who actively sought out my very docile Americauna Rooster with clearly murderous intent.

I haven't had an incident since and my Americauna is living his best life.
