Ok I first got my very own chickens about 2 years ago.

Before getting my own chickens when I was a kid my parents had chickens and grandparents had chickens so I was around them a lot.

Since getting my own after growing up I have had 3 roosters(currently have just one) and non of them have attacked me or been aggressive with me.

Even when I was a kid my parents/grandparents never had roosters attack me or family members.

So my question is why do I hear all these stories about rooster attacks and I have never had it happen to me?

Am I just lucky?

Right now I have one rooster" CJ Hopkins"(Buff Orpington) and he has his choice of 17 hens to mate with and is always looking to get some.

Maybe he's so horny going after the hens he doesn't care about attacking me?

Is a rooster more likely to attack if he doesn't have enough hens to keep him busy?

My rooster CJ has never had another rooster around to fight with does that make a difference?

Your parents and grandparents likely didn't put up with nasty roosters any more than they would have put up with a nasty, snappy, untrustworthy dog, and culled them out early and kept and bred on only the kindly, useful ones. Temperament and disposition can be bred on in chickens the same as in dogs. Alas, chickens are now straddling the line between livestock and pet, and just as you've got a lot of poorly bred dogs around right now, you're starting to see the end results of the same sort of poor breeding in chickens. Also, because they are becoming pets, owners tend to overlook the warning signs or make excuses when their animals begin behaving badly. You want a nice rooster, or dog, for that matter? Get it from proven parents that are themselves nice. Otherwise, it's a bit of a crap shoot.

I currently only have 1 rooster
The first one I sold because he was a smaller breed(golden campine)and I wanted a larger dual purpose breed. He wasn't aggressive to me.

The second died of a illness. He was Plymouth barred rock(never aggressive)

My current Rooster is a buff orpington and he is nice.

We ended up with a Buff Orpington rooster when “she” became a “he”. Our chick came from a local feed store so if genetics have something to do with whether they are aggressive or not, then he inherited it. He went to a new home where aggressive tendencies didn’t matter.

We now have another accidental rooster a Silkie this time. He is still sweet as can be so I guess time will tell if he continues to be that way.
