Aghhh...I killed it! Graphic embryo pics

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I learned that hard lesson too... now I put a question mark on the eggs in question, and leave them until day 17. If I candle them before moving them to the hatcher and I don't see a cram-packed egg, THEN I'll toss them. :aww When in doubt, if it's not weeping or stinky, leave it in.

I will be much more cautious from now on. I think the problem is that some of the eggs are super-easy to see, and so the ones that are harder and just appear dark were confusing me. I'll wait another week before making any big decisions.

yes, we cracked one at 15 days that we was sure was dead & it was still alive.

I practically cried.

I have pictures of all of our embryos that didn't make it. I can post some of them if you want asher. I think I have about 4 different stages of development at least.

The first one looks like it died at stage 26 or so (Day 5 about), and the other one looks like it is about stage 35-36 (Day 10 about) according to Hamburger and Hamilton "A series of normal stages in the development of the chick embryo" 1951. The year of the publication might be off.

Edit: Duh... you said you were on day 10. I need to read better! The first one was like day 5 though. If the second was swirling in the egg, may have been on it's way out anyways. Don't worry though, the nervous system isn't fully developed yet in a day 10 embryo. I think the sense of "pain" comes in at like day 14 or 16. I forget though so don't quote me.

I am so sorry this happened

I am sure it was hard on you finding the little embryo in there. Hopefully, you will have some healthy fluffy butts to make you feel better soon.

It was incredibly fascinating to see the development of the chick though. I have seen some pics of developing embryos on other web sites. Looking at other pics I was torn between sadness and anger that they opened a developing egg and on the other hand I was unbelievably fascinated.

Of course, you didn't mean for this to happen, but I am glad you shared.

Edited to add after looking at your pics I think one of the eggs I candled is a blood ring. Couldnt figure out what I was looking at in my egg but I think thats it

I am not Asher, but Iwould like to see your pics.

I am really sorry that you had to go through this, but those pics are really fascinating to me....maybe I'm a weirdo, but I would like to see more pics like that, it gives me an idea of what my little babies look like at different stages.

thank you for posting the pics... we are on day 10 also and saw 2 dark spots and marked them as maybe. I wasn't sure but now think maybe I saw eyes. Sorry for your loss but at least we might learn something.

I asked myhusband to candle a maybe for me to get a second opinion-- and he dropeed it- it was on day 16 -- it was perfect and still alive-- and he only cracked it. we treid to keep it going since it was only cracked- but a fall from waist level on ceramic tile was too much trauma. I am sorry. We are all learning
