Every time I go out to the coop to feed my chickens Buster my Buff Orpington rooster runs up to me and starts pecking my shoes. So I pick him up and hold him under my arm for a while to show him I am nice. Why Is he doing this?

Well-he thinks he's the boss of you. You need to show him that you are the boss. I pick up my two cockerals every day. I carry them for probably 5-10 minutes.

I would not let the behavior continue much longer though. He could hurt you.

I have two young kids. That behavior would not be tolerated no matter how much I like my cockerals. (And I really like them) My kids come first.

But you do what is best for you!

My cornish cross rooster was doing that too. I think he was just really excited about being fed. I somewhat gently grabbed/pushed his head away a few times and he stopped. Show no fear.

I cant find the link but someone had a rooster training manual on how to show your rooster that youare the boss and not him. I'msure someone will post it.

I think the first step is to grap him and hold him until he stops trying to get away, then try to put him down if he strugles agian pick him up until he stops, give him a little knock on the head to get his attention. keep doing this until he stop struggling.

The other thing is to not let him mate in front of you. If he does break it up. You are the Alpha rooster not him.

I hope someone posts the link, it was a good training manual.

I saw the same video. I tried to work with my rooster but it just made him meaner than ever. I finally gave in and decided he was headed for the soup pot. One evening he went after our 2 year old grandaughter, I was so upset I beat him with the shovel

. He laid on the grass for about an hour then drug himself by one foot to the coop were he laid on the floor for two days before he was finally able to get up on the perch. I felt horrible and hoped he would pull through, it was unkind of me to let him suffer.

That was about a month ago. He know makes a wide circle around me when we are in the yard together.

I hope his fear of me sticks, he is really a beautiful roo and I hate to lose him, but I draw the line at him attacking a small child who was no were near him when he chased her down and started attacking.

Other than the cornish cross biting my foot a couple of times, mine are quite friendly to me. I've put a lot of work into them as far as befriending them - feeding them treats, picking them up (gently) and petting them. They will relax on my leg and sit down and I can pet them. When ever I go in the coop I make a point to pet everyone's chest. I guess that's just another approach and it's worked for me.

I think it depends on the bird! I have a Buff Orp Rooster and he is a mean SOB...
He will attack if you turn you back on him...lucky for me he's gotten beat down quite a few times so he leaves me alone. Everyone else not so lucky. I keep him around because he protects his girls..hubby loves him, why I don't know he attacks him every chance he gets (I think he thinks of it as a game), and he's gorgeous. I do threaten him everyday with the soup pot now that I have five yound cockrels in the run. Knowing of course that I will never follow thru...

Anyway..i tried the holding him down, holding him upside down, picking him up at night after he's gone to roost..nothing worked with that bird.
