Old timers always had a dog or two to protect their chickens.People now try to do it without dogs.Its much harder to do it your way. If something with teeth and claws chases my chickens something equally equipped saves them.I only free range them when I'm home so if anything tries to kill my dogs I'll shoot it

Caging them and handling them a lot is the easiest way to tame them.
It's not that he doesn't trust you, he's trying to dominate you and drive you off as he views you as a rival rooster.
